Microsoft introduced Azure Role-based Certifications as part of its core strategy to completely restructure the Microsoft Learning portal to include specific technical job roles & requirements. Each role-based certification has the primary purpose of assessing and evaluating the skills and expertise of the candidate in that particular domain.
These exams are designed to help a candidate move up the certification path. To be eligible for a role-based certification, candidates must pass all the required exams. However, if the candidate has already passed 70-533 or 70-535, it will be different. To upgrade an old exam, the candidate must pass the Azure transition exam.

What are the Azure Transition Exams and what do they mean?
The Azure transition exams are transition certifications that will allow you to upgrade your old exams. AZ-102 is the transition test for exam 70-533, AZ-202 is for exam 70-732, AZ-302 for exam 70-535, and AZ-302 for exam 70-732.
Exam 70-533 is the Microsoft Azure exam for implementing Azure Infrastructure solutions. This exam was released for the first time on September 4, 2014. This exam was one of the most important Microsoft exams for Azure Administrators. This exam could be used to earn credits towards certifications like MCSA, MCSE, and MCP.
Exam 70-532 is the Microsoft exam for developing Microsoft Azure solutions. This exam was released for the first time on September 1, 2014. It has been a major exam for Azure Developers since its inception. This exam can be used to earn certifications such MCP, MCSD and MCSA.
The exam 70-535 is relatively new, compared to 70-533. This exam was made available on November 30, 2017. It was designed to cover a higher level topic, such as “Architecting Azure solutions”. This exam will count towards certifications like MCP, MCSD and MCSA.

Are the Exams 70-533, 70-533 and 70-535 still valid?
These exams have ceased to be valid and are no longer valid. Microsoft had declared that the exams would be ending on December 31, 2018. These exams are no longer available online. It is best to cancel your plans to take these exams if you still plan to do so.
Why did Microsoft retire these exams?
The new Microsoft policy on certifications, exams, and exams states that the company is moving towards performance- or role-based certifications. This policy will see exams that begin with numbers 70-532, 70-533, and so on. could retire sooner or later.
What if I have already passed any of these exams?
Yes. However, if you can pass the Azure transition exam within a certain time limit, it is possible. This will save you time and effort spent on the old exams. These Azure transition exams are available for all three exams, i.e. 70-532, 70-533 and 70-535 are the Azure transition exams for the older exams. They are AZ-202, AZ-102 and AZ-302 respective.

A Short Note on Azure Upgrade Exams/ Transition Exams
Microsoft offers Azure upgrade exams (also known as the Azure transition exams), for each role in the various Azure certifications. 70-533 was for the Microsoft Exam for Implementing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions. Candidates must pass two separate exams in order to get the role-based certification. Candidates who have passed the 70-533 exam will only need to pass a transition exam, AZ-102, in order to obtain Azure Administrator Associate certification.
